A contestant carves a bottom turn during the 2006 Mavericks big wave surfing contest. The name of the rider is unknown. Some background on Mavericks: Mavericks is Northern California's biggest surf competition held near San Francisco in Half Moon Bay, California. Winter swells bring in the big waves and the contest is usually held around February or early March every year. Surfers are notified that contest is imminent, and are then given a 24-hour notice to get to half moon bay for the start of the contest. The Mavericks contest was founded by Jeff Clark, a local and pioneer surfer who helped establish the Mavericks reef as a serious big wave break.
